The Monaro was Holden's answer to whether an Australian manufacturer could produce a genuine performance coupe, and the answer was unambiguous. The HQ series arrived in 1971 with cleaner lines than the HG it replaced, and the GTS specification sat at the top of the Monaro range — high-compression V8, close-ratio Turbo-Hydramatic or four-speed manual, wide-body stance. Peter Brock drove a Monaro GTS in his early Bathurst appearances before the relationship with Holden deepened into the HDT programme. The car earned its place in Australian motorsport history before Brock cemented it.
