Akio Uchiyama designed the FD RX7 and produced something that has never needed updating. The shape was right from the start — low nose, sweeping roofline, haunches that communicated rear-wheel drive without advertising it. The twin-sequential turbo 13B rotary delivered power in a way no piston engine could replicate, and the chassis gave drivers more information than almost anything at the price. Japan built many fine sports cars in this era. The FD was the most complete argument that a rotary engine belonged in a serious performance car.
