The 1963 Ford Econoline was Ford's answer to the Volkswagen Type 2 — a compact forward-control van with the driver positioned directly over the front axle. In stock trim, a sensible tool for tradespeople. In the hands of the drag racing community, the Econoline became something else entirely. The flat nose and short wheelbase transferred weight onto the rear wheels on launch, and builders discovered that with a big engine mounted in the bed, the Econoline would pull away from almost anything in the staging lanes.
