In 1986, Porsche released the 959 — a car they had no commercial obligation to build and every engineering reason to be proud of. The twin-sequential turbocharged flat-six, the electronically managed all-wheel drive, the hollow magnesium alloy wheels: every major system was either entirely new or further advanced than anything else available. It became the fastest street-legal production car in the world, but the number that mattered most wasn't the top speed — it was the thinking behind the engineering. The 959 was Porsche working thirty years ahead of the market.
