On the morning of 23 June 1991, a Mazda crossed the finish line at Circuit de la Sarthe and changed motorsport history. The 787B's quad-rotor R26B engine — screaming to 9,000 rpm on the Mulsanne straight in a sound that spectators remember to this day — had run for 24 hours and beaten everything in the field. It remains the first and only time a Japanese manufacturer has taken overall victory at Le Mans.
